I enjoyed the art, I thought the tough, sinewy look appropriate for the book - and for a Dark Horse book too. I feel like I need a bit more plot to chow down on but Conan's often suffered from the kind of simplicity barbarian plots have tended to suffer from in pulp fiction. I'm less forgiving of that.

Regarding the mythology, I felt the same way. Green Lantern would have been a stronger movie if it hadn't catapulted the audience between (Green Planet That I Know I'll Get Wrong) and Earth, especially where the conflict was earth-based anyway.

It's too early to care about these things. Issue #1 gave him, dare I say it, "mystique". The less we know, the better at this point.

A painful and frustrating start to the second arc, f'sure. The first arc was a good start, a decent read with a weak ending. Hopefully the second arc will be a frustrating start to a decent read with a good ending.

This arc is apparently setting up to explain how Atlantis was destroyed and I don't really care. I don't know Aquaman well enough to care. Writer Geoff Johns needed to work to engage me with the character (as he did, a little, in the first arc) before diving into the mythology of his backstory. It's going to have to be a gripping plot to interest me and instead part one was messy, confusing and ill-conceived. The constant flashbacks and forwards were irritating and just kept dragging things out - you called it right, Adam, there was far, far too much set up here.

I'd like to see Aquaman succeed. I hope this is just a poor start to an engaging arc, otherwise it's going to be downhill fast.

Don’t know much about Aquaman. This issue taught me that his Mom was a mermaid, and his Dad a human. I think? Anyway, my understanding was that the Navy dug something up, found an Atlantean emblem on it, and called Aquaman, because the thing was emitting an echolocation type of screech, and they needed to know what to do next. Aquaman comes to see what’s going on, and some armored guys come steal the emblem. He chases their (spaceship? Airplane?) vehicle, punches one in the mask, and water poors out, making him realize it’s an Atlantean. Then said plane crashes, which is how he’s ended up in the middle of the desert. While there, he hallucinates that his Dad is disappointed in his decision to leave the sea for his wife. Then he re-finds the emblem (which was apparently the “black box” equivalent of old-school Atlantean boats) , sticks it in a little water, and sees a Hologram of the captain, whose boat is being invaded by… something mysterious and menacing. He says something about “because our king and queen lied to us”, and since Aquaman was just “hearing” his dad talk about how he shouldn’t have given up his kingship, that seems significant. Then, he finally gets home (the Navy rescues him from the desert), and Mara is gone, with a note saying she went to get dog food. There is no real reason for that to be taken as something foreboding, but it REALLY seems like it is, and she’s perhaps been taken against her will and a note forged? So, as usual, I just want to see what happens next… and I probably should learn a little more about Aquaman’s back story.

It was a divisive movie, Adam, really popular with some and derided by many others. I wasn't a fan, like you. I think the film-makers misunderstood the campy nature of the TV show: I don't think it set out to be campy, back in the day, I think they were doing their best to make an entertaining spy-fi show on a budget and that it ended up being campy. The movie went for deliberately campy and in doing so failed to capture the nostalgia for the show.

I have to say, when it comes to the comic I expect better from comics legend Grant Morrison. This wasn't as smart as I've come to expect from him.

Okay, I'll say more.

My only frame-of-reference for this comic was the movie in which Sean Connery played a villain, and it was awful. The comic confused me because no one ever took off their bowler and used it as a weapon. (Was that the movie? It's fuzzy.)

I'm sure that they spent a lot to acquire the rights. Maybe it's too early to tell what they intend to do with it.

Heather, don't be scared of the content of TWD ... it's R-rated at times but well worth it. It's gripping.

I share your penchant for feeling a need to finish a story out, too - I wonder if that's part of the reason why it's so hard to drop titles long after we've stopped loving them? Because we don't have a sense of closure?

Agreed. Because of that, I love Runaways (although trying to figure out the order of those in the TP format is annoying...) and Rising Stars. I have not yet read Locke and Key, (I really hate waiting for the next installments of things), or Walking Dead (I'll be honest, I'm a little scared of the content, but I'll probably get to it eventually.) One author and one idea makes for great writing.

Ian, I love that idea, because it would make a new Superman story very exciting if we hadn't see one for a few years. However, you are also correct that they'd never go for it.

As you say, we "shrug it off", because we have no real choice. All you can do to let the writers know that you didn't want them to do that is not but it, but half the time you don't know they've done something stupid till you've read the whole thing. Also, I don't know about anyone else, but there are many books I've read, even if I wasn't liking the writing style, etc. just because I need the closure, and need to know what happened (Leven Thumps series and Charlie Bone series come to mind. Not comics, and borrowed from the library, but still true.) It just bugs my brain otherwise. But what a waste of time, you know?

Not having seen the show or the movie I was lost as can be. But I did find the characters interesting. Maybe if I read the next one it will help me understand what is going on.
